We are working with The Atlantic Philanthropies to evaluate their U.S.-based cluster of grantees that are providing disadvantaged children with access to enriched learning environments and supportive services both during the school day and in the out-of-school time hours. Atlantic’s grantees promote models of learning for urban youth ages 8 to 16 that blend best practices in academic enrichment with youth development supports.
Our evaluation is assessing the grantmaking strategy’s progress, and is informing the strategy with ongoing lessons that help position it for maximum leverage and benefit.
Evaluation data come from sources both internal and external to the strategy. Internally, we review grantee and evaluation reports and conduct interviews with Atlantic staff and grantees. Externally, we conduct interviews with stakeholders who represent a larger community of experts that The Atlantic Philanthropies does not fund but who are involved with the issue and are critical to its success and growth. These experts include thought leaders in the after school or youth development fields, other funders, public officials, and researchers. External experts offer their perspective on Atlantic’s strategy and the opportunities or barriers that might impact its success.
