The December 2009 issue of Early Childhood News, published by the NYC Early Childhood Professional Development Institute, contains a commentary by Harvard Family Research Project’s Senior Consultant M. Elena Lopez. Early Childhood News is an online, quarterly resource for adults working with developing children.

In her article, Elena Lopez explores the benefits of creating strong partnerships between early childhood programs and families. She notes that these relationships not only influence young children’s outcomes in cognitive development and social skills, but also that engagement in early childhood lays the groundwork for supporting student achievement as children move through the school system.

The article highlights the importance of programs forging partnerships with families and also acknowledges that becoming a family-centered program often involves transformational change.  Strategies that foster such partnerships include strengthening the family–child bond, addressing diversity, and building trust.
