About the Proposed Extension Period
The U.S. Department of Education has proposed extending the grant period for the Parental Information Resource Centers (PIRCs), which would allow the centers to operate through fiscal year 2012. The PIRC program provides federal funds to 62 organizations working to promote successful parental involvement policies and programs in all 50 states and several of its territories. An additional year of funding would allow the PIRCs to complete a rigorous evaluation of their services provided to families, communities, and schools.

The National Family, School, and Community Engagement Working Group's Commentary
The National Family, School, and Community Engagement Working Group, a collaborative of leaders in the family engagement field, including Harvard Family Research Project’s Heather Weiss, applauded the Department’s proposal to sustain PIRC operations.

The Working Group also recommended that the extension place an emphasis on data collection, research, best practices, and program outcomes that will assist in the development of a strengthened PIRC program. The Working Group believes that collecting valuable, usable, and relevant information will be helpful in promoting innovation and scaling the program’s best and most innovative practices in building the capacity of state and local educational agencies to raise student achievement.
