Commentary

Families and educators—as well as staff from schools and community organizations—play important roles in fostering children’s and youth’s learning interests both inside and outside of the classroom. They also share the responsibility for creating pathways for learning across the day and year. Christine Patton and Margaret Caspe highlight our knowledge about what these groups are doing and can do to connect children to learning opportunities. The authors explore the time that children and families spend together in learning pursuits, the constraints on families’ time, and the ways that institutions are supporting families’ time use.
