With a renewed emphasis on school improvement in today’s education climate, many schools and districts are investing in strategies to promote teacher effectiveness. One of these strategies is building teacher capacity to meaningfully reach out to and engage families in support of their children’s learning through the use of teaching cases.

Preparing Educators to Engage Families supports teacher training and professional development in the area of family engagement. This volume helps prepare teachers and other professionals to partner with the families of elementary school children for student success and positive development. This second edition pairs child development theory with research-based teaching cases that reflect critical dilemmas in family-school-community relations, especially among families for whom poverty and cultural differences are daily realities.

Educators and students can read this book to learn how to:

  • Problem-solve dilemmas about family–school relationships
  • Apply different “lenses,” or theoretical perspectives, to analyze family engagement practices
  • Consider the shared responsibility of families, schools, and communities in the development of the whole child
