The National Policy Forum for Family, School, and Community Engagement—hosted by the U.S. Department of Education on November 9—brought together education thought leaders to help inform the Department’s family and community engagement strategy.  Harvard Family Research Project’s Heather Weiss, Elena Lopez, and Heidi Rosenberg helped organize the event.

The one-day forum consisted of panel discussions by leaders in education policy, research, and practice. A major theme throughout all discussions was how policy can support meaningful family engagement, using strategies such as:

  • Training and professional development for school staff
  • Capacity building to help entities develop, implement, and evaluate initiatives
  • Encouraging the blending of resources in creative ways
  • Sharing best practices via learning communities
  • Scaling effective practices
  • Using the federal government’s leadership role to develop a common family engagement framework and accountability system to ensure that state and local family engagement goals are being met.
