Priscilla Little, Senior Researcher at Harvard Family Research Project (HFRP), was one of a four-member panel of distinguished speakers at a US Senate briefing on the 21st Century Community Learning Centers (21st CCLC) on September 29, 2010. Senator Christopher Dodd was the honorary host of the briefing, sponsored by the Afterschool Alliance and entitled “21st Century Community Learning Centers: Enhancing Learning, Helping Working Families, Keeping Kids Healthy & Safe.”

Authorized in Title IV of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA), 21st CCLC is currently the only federal funding source dedicated exclusively to afterschool, before-school, and summer learning programs. Little drew on her years of research and evaluation work with HFRP to testify that more than a decade of research evidence suggests that 21st CCLC funding can help quality afterschool programs to provide a wide array of high quality afterschool experiences for children and youth, work toward improving academic success, contribute to improved child well-being, and promote child health and wellness.
