On The Huffington Post, Marian Wright Edelman, President of the Children’s Defense Fund (CDF), describes the CDF Freedom Schools program, which combines academic preparation with social awareness and activism in predominantly low-income African American communities. CDF Freedom Schools is one of 14 year-round learning initiatives that are studied in Harvard Family Research Project’s recently released research brief, “Year-Round Learning: Linking School, Afterschool, and Summer Learning to Support Student Success.”

CDF Freedom Schools partners with public schools, community organizations, faith congregations, colleges and universities, and juvenile justice facilities. Similar to the other year-round learning initiatives studied in the research brief, children participating in the summer program maintained or made gains in their reading skills over the course of the summer.
