Pioneer Press highlighted visits from teachers at Johnson Elementary School in St. Paul, Minnesota to students’ homes as a promising way to increase parents’ engagement in their children’s education. Citing our work, the article noted that family involvement is a core element in helping school turnaround efforts by dramatically improving student achievement.

According to the article, home visits from pairs of teachers are one way to turn the mistrust that can exist between families and school personnel, especially in low-performing school districts, into partnership. Some parents are wary of teachers’ efforts to get to know families, being used to hearing from schools only when their child has a problem, but most welcome the personal contact and are encouraged by the face-to-face interaction to further involvement in their children’s education. Teachers, in turn, find that the visits offer information and insights valuable to their classroom teaching.
