In an interview in Spotlight on Digital Media and Learning, Heather Weiss, founder and director of Harvard Family Research Project, discusses her work with the MacArthur Foundation to evaluate the foundation’s digital media and learning initiative. The initiative, now five years old, examines how digital media are changing the way young people learn, play, socialize, and participate in civic life.

Weiss comments, “efforts to positively shape digital media to support new ways of learning and engaging in civic life are of enormous consequence for children, youth and families, and just about every social and educational institution.” She adds, “There are also huge challenges to be addressed if digital media are to live up to their potential to support learning . . . As evaluators, we recognize both the potential and the challenges.”
