The Denver Post discusses a new effort by the Denver Public Schools to encourage parent involvement in education. As part of a wide-scale school reform program, parents are being urged to spend at least 30 minutes every day "doing some sort of intentional activity" with their children.

The article cites HFRP director Heather Weiss, who talks about why family involvement is important and how schools can get more parents involved.

Excerpt from the article:

"Education reforms across the nation are beginning to turn more toward emphasizing nonschool-related supports, such as parental involvement, said Heather Weiss, founder and director of the Harvard Family Research Project.

'When you sit down with your child and read, you are saying, "It's important to read and it's important to learn,"' Weiss said. 'You are sending a set of messages to a child about the importance of education and learning.'"
