An article by the Associated Press, available on Boston.com, describes the different ways that parents engage in their older children’s homework. Whether by enrolling in online classes with their child, or taking classes on their own to refresh their skills, many parents seek additional education to support their teen’s academic learning at home.

Learning programs for parents, according to the article, range from courses in Latin to Parent University at Boston Public Schools, which offers free three-day instructional workshops for parents who struggle to keep up with their child’s schoolwork in math, science, and reading. Similarly, a free Math for Moms and Dads course is offered by Stevens-Henager College in Utah and Idaho.

Quoting Heidi Rosenberg, Senior Research Analyst with Harvard Family Research Project, the article urges parents to remember that their involvement is ultimately about helping their adolescent children “take responsibility for their own learning . . . as they work toward their future goals.”
