In the Education Week article New California Accountability System Signals Progress, Sonya Heisters commends the California State Board of Education for adopting a new accountability system that incorporates multiple measures of school quality, including indicators of parent engagement and school climate.

The article highlights the importance of gathering feedback from a variety of sources, including students, families, teachers, and school staff. Citing a resource from the Harvard Family Research Project, the article argues that as districts implement family engagement efforts, they need to determine which strategies are most effective by speaking with families. Similarly, feedback instruments designed for teachers and school staff provide valuable information about how the school functions as a workplace.

In addition, Heisters notes that schools and districts must then utilize that feedback to inform school improvement initiatives.
