Beyond Random Acts: Family, School, and Community Engagement as an Integral Part of Education Reform
On The Huffington Post, Susan Ochshorn calls family involvement an essential element to children’s development and school success but decries proposed legislation that points blame at parents and, in some cases, punishes them for their childrens’ repeated absences. Making reference to Harvard Family Research Project’s November 2010 paper “Beyond Random Acts: Family, School, and Community Engagement as an Integral Part of Education Reform,” Ochshorn discusses the need for systemic and sustained family and community involvement in education reform.
Ochshorn points out that “family, school and community engagement has recently gained traction as a viable strategy for school turnaround efforts and promotion of systems change writ large.” Such engagement, built on a foundation of shared responsibility, “places parents right where they should be: at the heart of education reform.”
