The Tennessean published an article by Nashville's Vice Mayor Diane Neighbors, who co-chairs the Project for Student Success task force. The project, which got its start six months ago, has worked to develop recommendations for reducing the student dropout rate and increasing graduation rates. According to the article, the task force is divided into four subcommittees, which focus on chronic poor academic performance, student risk factors, family and parental role, and community and neighborhood risk factors.
The article cites Harvard Family Research Project's research in out-of-school time.
Excerpt from the article:
"The Harvard Family Research Project reported high-quality after-school programs improve attitudes toward school, promotion to the next grade, attendance, communication, problem-solving, physical activity and nutrition. Students are more likely to stay in school."
