November 2010 was declared Kentucky Parent Involvement Month in a proclamation signed by Kentucky Governor Steve Beshear and presented on November 2nd by First Lady Jane Beshear and Kentucky Education Commissioner Dr. Terry Holliday.  Supporting the month’s designation are a “Kentucky Parent Involvement Month Calendar” and a separate sheet of bookmarks offering tips for parents on homework help and parent–teacher conferences. Both calendar and bookmarks refer to research from Harvard Family Research Project demonstrating that all parents can make a difference in the life of a child by being involved in their children’s education.

The calendar describes one activity each day that parents can undertake to support their children’s learning, such as “Visit your public library with your child,” or “Ask your child, ‘What did you observe in Science class today?’”  Along with the homework help tips on the bookmarks is a list of “Top 10 Questions to Ask at a Parent–Teacher Conference.”
