The San Francisco Chronicle reports that John Muir Elementary School in San Francisco, CA, is ramping up family engagement as a key strategy to improve student outcomes. Believing that parent involvement is critical to a school’s success, the principal used funds from a federal School Improvement Grant to hire two parent liaisons, including one to reach out to Spanish-speaking families.

The parent liaisons greet parents each day as they drop off children, answer questions, help parents with classroom issues and paperwork, and make frequent home visits.

The article quotes Heather Weiss, founder and director of Harvard Family Research Project, who identifies family involvement as “one of, if not the strongest, predictor of learning and school success.” Additionally, she says, "If families—particularly families that are low income, from a different culture who don't speak English—are going to be involved, it's because the school reached out and engaged them."
