The Beyond School blog on the Education Week website covered the recent release of The Family Engagement for High School Success Toolkit: Planning and implementing an initiative to support the pathway to graduation for at-risk students. The toolkit was created in a joint effort by Harvard Family Research Project (HFRP) and United Way Worldwide (UWW) as part of the AT&T-sponsored Family Engagement for High School Success initiative.

The Toolkit highlights the lessons learned from a planning process that tasked 15 local United Way “pilot sites” with bringing together schools, community organizations, families, and other stakeholders to develop a comprehensive family engagement initiative. With support from the UWW and HFRP, these pilot sites adopted outcome-focused approaches with the aim of designing family engagement strategies to remove obstacles to engagement, and, ultimately, build stronger connections between families and schools. From this careful planning process the pilot sites and their partners in the community developed implementation plans with strong potential for success.

The Beyond School blog post highlights a salient point in the Toolkit: “Many of the practices to combat these issues can be used for various types of parent/community-engagement initiatives, not just those targeted to reach at-risk high school students.”

The post also reminded readers of the two-part webinar series designed to help users make the most of the Toolkit. The first (on December 7) will help organizations create their own family engagement plan and the second (on December 8) will discuss implementation successes and challenges. If you are not able to attend the live webinar events, you will find the archived webinars here.
