Psychology Today logoIn the Psychology Today article Developmental Equity: Path to Student Success?, Marilyn Price-Mitchell argues that to support children’s success, the family engagement field needs to prioritize what Price-Mitchell calls “developmental equity”. Representing a shift away from the traditional definition of educational equity and the focus on children’s academic performance, developmental equity emphasizes children’s growth and development via positive relationships, experiences, and environments.

Harvard Family Research Project’s publication Promoting Educational Equity Through Family Engagement: The King Legacy is highlighted in the article, positioning families as partners in children’s learning and as advocates for educational change. The other resources mentioned, likewise, consider how schools collaborate and engage with diverse families and build meaningful partnerships.

Furthermore, the article explores how a focus on positive development benefits all children —from helping them become more engaged citizens to providing them with the social and emotional skills necessary for success—and how developmental inattentiveness, in contrast, can negatively affect children.
