The Journal News announced its upcoming Back to School section, which will hit the stands on August 8. The 36-page insert will focus on the theme of parental involvement, in addition to providing information on each school district in New York's Westchester, Rockland, and Putnam counties. The Journal News spoke with Suzanne Bouffard, HFRP's Project Manager for Family Involvement, about what family involvement is and why it's important.

Excerpt from the article:

"'What do we mean by parental involvement? Broadly, all the behavior practiced ... by families to further education,' said Suzanne Bouffard, project manager of the Harvard Graduate School of Education's Family Research Project.

"'Research shows you can increase achievement. There's a clear benefit to schools as well as families" when parents get involved, she said. 'Family involvement can and should happen in all the settings where kids learn. We often talk about it at the school building, but it also needs to be done in after-school programs, college prep programs, community settings. We have to broaden the vision of what it means to be involved.'

"Schools can't educate children in a vacuum, she said, and families also can't do it alone.

"'There need to be connections. And everybody has a responsibility to make sure families get involved,' she said."
