As students around the country are heading back to school this month, last week’s PBS NewsHour tackled the issue of summer learning loss and featured one program striving to make a difference for low-income minority students in Seattle.

Rainier Scholars, a year-round enrichment program, accepts 60-65 low-income minority students each year and asks them to commit to finishing high school and college. The initiative includes 2 years of full-time summer school, weekend classes, and academic support throughout each student’s 11-year journey with the program.

We are delighted to note that one of the guests interviewed about the success of the program was Helen Malone, former Harvard Family Research Project graduate research assistant and co-author of our June 2011 report, Year-Round Learning: Linking School, Afterschool, and Summer Learning to Support Student Success, which features the Rainier Scholars program among other year-round enrichment efforts.

Watch this segment on PBS NewsHour’s website (and look for Helen at the 2:50 mark!)
