Parent–teacher conferences are important in strengthening family-school communications to help ensure student success. In thisTeacher Leadership blog on Edutopia, Matt Davis presents a variety of Web resources to help both families and teachers have a positive and productive conference experience. Among the resources he cites is Harvard Family Research Project’s Parent-Teacher Conference Tip Sheets for Principals, Teachers, and Parents. Available in both English and Spanish, these tip sheets are organized into sections written specifically for parents, teachers, and principals so that parents and teachers can feel prepared for conferences and school administrators can support parents and teachers in these meetings.

Davis also refers to another HFRP resource, Academic Parent-Teacher Teams: Reorganizing Parent-Teacher Conferences Around Data, written by Maria C. Paredes, Director of Community Education at Creighton School District in Arizona. Paredes discusses one of the district’s family engagement strategies to help families understand results of a district-developed standards-based assessment in the areas of reading and math by having parent–teacher conferences shift to a focused discussion around data.
