Web Conference: Creating a Conversation About Anywhere, Anytime Learning

Children and youth learn anywhere, anytime, not just in classrooms during school hours. How can families, afterschool programs and community organizations work together to offer children meaningful learning opportunities outside of the school setting? What is the role of families in anywhere, anytime learning? How can we make quality afterschool and summer learning opportunities accessible to all children?

Expert panelists and dynamic web conference participants explored these and related questions in Creating a Conversation About Anywhere, Anytime Learning on Wednesday, October 15, 2014. This was the second web conference of our year-long series in HFRP Interact, in which we build on ideas we have been exploring in our FINE Newsletter related to the expanded definition of family engagement in the context of anywhere, anytime learning. 

Panelists Gregg Behr, executive director, Grable Foundation; Terri Ferinde Dunham, partner, Collaborative Communications Group, and lead, National Network of Statewide Afterschool Networks; and Lori Takeuchi, senior director and research scientist, Joan Ganz Cooney Center, joined host, Heather B. Weiss, director of Harvard Family Research Project, and moderator, Christine Patton, senior research analyst at HFRP, to look at these and related questions.

Tips from the web conference include:

  • Pay attention to where, when, why, and how kids learn, and create appropriate learning experiences.
  • Co-develop with families a learning plan for each child that spans grades, ages, settings, educators, and learning supports.
  • Guide children and families to use libraries, museums, and other institutions that offer innovative opportunities for learning through digital media.
  • Empower students and parents with data to guide students’ progress along learning pathways.
  • Create opportunities for kids to earn badges to help them appreciate and gain added meaning from the skills they’ve learned and to help serve as a gateway to college and work.
