Recognizing the important role that family engagement plays in a comprehensive strategy to keep teens in school and ensure that they graduate prepared for the future, United Way Worldwide, sponsored by AT&T and working in partnership with Harvard Family Research Project, set out to learn how communities can support families to ensure that at-risk students stay on track to graduate from high school.

The recently released The Family Engagement for High School Success Toolkit: Planning and implementing an initiative to support the pathway to graduation for at-risk students distills the successes and lessons learned throughout a 5 month planning process at 15 United Way pilot sites—where community stakeholders worked together to create family engagement action plans—and through the first year of implementing the initiatives.

Join us as Jennifer Enderlin from AT&T moderates a two-part webinar series designed to introduce the main themes of the toolkit and explore the central components of planning and implementing family engagement strategies for at-risk high school students.

Presenters include representatives from the United Way pilot sites profiled in the toolkit, who, together with their community partners, will discuss their experiences developing and implementing their family engagement strategies.

Topics include:

  • Creating a strong community of partners
  • Using data to identify the students and families most in need of services
  • Building strong partnerships with schools
  • Identifying obstacles to effective family engagement
  • Developing strategies to promote family engagement
  • Reaching out to families and building trusting relationships
  • Tracking student performance and family participation
  • Collecting data for evaluation and continuous improvement

About the toolkit
Family Engagement for High School Success Toolkit: Planning and implementing an initiative to support the pathway to graduation for at-risk students, is a free toolkit designed to guide schools and community organizations through the process of creating family engagement strategies for improving outcomes for high school students at risk of not graduating. The toolkit is part of a family engagement pilot project that AT&T supported with a $2 million contribution to United Way in 2009. The toolkit is available as a free PDF at www.hfrp.org/HighSchoolSuccessToolkit.
